Former Expedia execs move into traffic technology

REDMOND, Wash. --imageInrix, a new company formed by three former Microsoft and Expedia executives to focus on automotive traffic technology, has announced that US$6.1million in Series A funding has been secured. The company's mission: Its mission: to revolutionize the way people get from point A to point B.

In an oversubscribed round co-led by two of the country's top venture capital firms, Inrix said the funds will be used to enter the traffic information market with an unrivaled set of technologies licensed exclusively from Microsoft Research.
The Pacific Northwest-based technology company, headed by former Microsoft and Expedia executives Bryan Mistele, Craig Chapman and Seth Eisner, will be backed by August Capital and Venrock Associates.

Mass market telematics test starts in Europe

LEUVEN, Belgium -- ACUNIA, a pioneer in the emerging automotive telematics industry, is playing a key role in Europe's Third Generation Telematics (3GT) project. The 3GT project runs from June 2002 through November 2003 and is supported by the EC Information Society Directorate General.

Cisco announces secure mobile access router

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Cisco Systems has announced the Cisco 3200 Series Mobile Access Router, a new system described as "optimized for mobile vehicular applications that pioneers a shift in the way organizations communicate and share information across wireless networks." The new mobile router works with entire networks of communication devices in moving vehicles such as airplanes, ships, tanks and trains, and is designed for "always-on" connectivity.

Telematics market on verge of dramatic shift

The consumer telematics industry is poised for a dramatic shift this year, according to the findings of a new report from Allied Business Intelligence.  According to the report's findings, the aggregate global market for telematics is expected to grow to over $12.3 billion by 2007 from $2.2 billion for 2001.

Mercedes-Benz shows new wireless at Comdex

LAS VEGAS -- Mercedes-Benz USA demonstrated 802.11a wireless technology from Atheros Communications in a specially equipped C320 Sedan this week at the Comdex trade show. The sedan is a research prototype used to develop and show services that would be made possible by high-performance wireless communications in an automobile.
