DoCoMo smart card enables global GSM roaming

imageTOKYO -- Global roaming capabilities for mobile phone users may be taking a big step forward. But, the online application is in Japanese only. NTT DoCoMo is introducing its World Walker G-Card, a new smart card that will enable DoCoMo mova 2G subscribers to use both DoCoMo and non-DoCoMo GSM mobile phones for international roaming outside of Japan beginning next month.

BlackBerry with international roaming introduced

LAS VEGAS -- Research In Motion Limited has introduced two new data and voice-enabled BlackBerry Wireless Handhelds, each with an integrated speaker-microphone. The new Java-based BlackBerry 6710 and BlackBerry 6720 each deliver e-mail, phone, SMS, browser and organizer applications in a compact, always-on handheld.

Seamless Wi-Fi, cellular roaming test announced

FREMONT, Calif. -- The first field trial marrying cellular and Wi-Fi networks has been announced by Green Packet, a leading developer of intelligent roaming infrastructure and wireless network solutions, and WiFi Metro, one of the largest wireless Internet service providers (WISPs) in the U.S. The trial will take place in the San Francisco Bay Area over the next three months using GreenPacket's SONaccess IP mobility solution and the WiFi Metro network.

Bell Labs has global wireless roaming breakthrough

MURRAY HILL, N.J. --  Researchers at Bell Labs have announced a software breakthrough that will enable global roaming across all wireless network types, including third-generation (3G) technologies such as CDMA2000, Universal Mobile Telecommunications Services (UMTS) and other high-speed data access technologies such as 802.11.
