Low-cost airlines sell direct on web, avoid GDSs

imageThe rapid expansion of low-cost airlines is causing a clash of world views with traditional airlines. According to the Sydney Morning Herald, on one side are the traditional carriers, operating through traditional global distribution systems (GDSs) such as Amadeus or Sabre. On the other are the low-cost airlines, Virgin Blue and Qantas' Jetstar, seeking to move to a different model using internet-based systems. The gulf between the two is large and, according to one industry player, will not get any smaller. Virgin Blue's global sales manager, Jon Marshall, says anyone not working on directly connected systems now will "end up with a big dinosaur."

What is unclear is what this means to the marketplace. Will Orbitz somehow be integrated, or will it continue business as usual? If the Cendant-Orbitz deal goes through, you will see more of these types of deals."
