easyJet plans to add a direct booking function on its Facebook page
easyJet is gearing up to allow its fans to buy directly from Facebook as it looks to add e-commerce to its Facebook Page.
According to a report filed by nma.co.uk, the airline has launched an online holiday planner which lets users make plans with their friends on Facebook. The airline is planning to add a direct booking function on Facebook, rather than direct people to the easyJet website.
Katie Stitson, UK marketing manager for easyJet, reportedly said, “The group holiday planner lets you co-ordinate dates and availability and invite your friends via Facebook and email. We’re looking to develop this further by adding booking functionality.”
Recently, rival budget airline Ryanair was in news for its foray into the social media world. The airline is developing an online travel community. However, Ryanair said it wouldn’t engage with consumers on third-party social sites like Facebook and Twitter. All activity will be hosted on ryanair.com. Plans include a flight comparison engine and a tie-up with travel specialist Frommer’s.
Airlines acknowledge that the major challenge associated with social media is the “real time, 24/7” nature of the medium. In addition, posts and messages can amplify and go viral very quickly. As a result, companies need to dedicate resources to monitor the space, develop content and consider the long-term strategies needed in maintain presence in a rapidly evolving space.
