We are Expedia for India: Makemytrip.com
Online travel company MakeMyTrip, which had launched its website for the
Indian market in September this year, expects its Indian revenues to
surpass contribution from its US operations by 2007-08.
Speaking to eyefotravel.com, Deep Kalra, founder and chief executive
officer, MakeMyTrip said that the company is catering to 500 customers a
day through online operations. At the end of this fiscal year, March
2006, the company expects Indian operations to contribute 15-20 per cent
of its total revenue. The company is confident of exceeding
100,000-customer mark by next March in India.
According to Kalra, in the next financial year, the share may go up to
35 per cent. "In the 2007-08, the revenue share from our Indian
operations will surpass our revenue collection from US market," said
Kalra.
On operations in India, Kalra said there is demand for catering to
domestic tickets services online. "With launch of LCCs, there was a
great confusion." He says the company has simplified the planning and
buying process through its site and by offering real-time services.
Kalra says the surprise aspect of operations has been the domestic
hotels bookings. "We are booking 70-80 room nights on daily basis. This
even touches up to 100 room nights," he says.
"We are Expedia for India," says Kalra.
When the company had launched its website for India, Kalra had said,
"The timing is ideal for MakeMyTrip to enter the Indian market. The
Indian travel & tourism (T&T) industry has been ranked as the second
fastest growing T&T economy, Internet has crossed 25 million mark and
e-commerce sales are likely to touch Rs 1080 crores (US$245.45 million)
by end of 2006." While all the products are being be sold online,
MakeMyTrip has set up a 24x7 customer service operations to assist
travellers who may have post-purchase requirements. The 50-seater, call
centre is located at New Delhi.
MakeMyTrip was launched in 2000 as an online travel company catering to
the USA to India market.
