Southwest Airlines Co. has announced that it flew 5.7 billion revenue
passenger miles (RPMs) in August 2005, a 13.7% increase from the 5.0
billion RPMs flown in August 2004.
The airline stated that available seat miles (ASMs) increased 12.2% to
7.5 billion from the August 2004 level of 6.6 billion. The load factor
for the month was 76.1%, compared to 75.1% for the same period last
year.
"For the eight months ended August 31, 2005, Southwest flew 40.3 billion
RPMs, compared to the 36.3 billion RPMs recorded for the same period of
2004, an increase of 11.2%. Available seat miles increased 12.0% to 56.4
billion from the 2004 level of 50.3 billion. The year-to-date load
factor was 71.5%, compared to 72.1% for the same period last year," said
the airline.
easyJet recorded an 18% increase in passenger numbers to 2.9 million
during August compared with the same period last year. The airline's
load factor, or the number of passengers as a proportion of the number
of seats available, was 88.4% against 88.6% last time.
On a rolling 12-month basis, the total passengers touched
29,169,743-mark, up 22% from the August 2004 figure, while the load
factor increased 0.8% to 85.2%.
Ray Webster, easyJet chief executive, said, "August was another strong
month for easyJet: load factor and passenger growth were both virtually
unchanged from last month. Unit revenue (total revenue per seat flown)
continued to increase year-on-year. We maintain the revenue and profits
guidance issued with our Q3 statistics last month." Webster added,
"During the month easyJet announced six new routes for the coming winter
season, including five to Geneva for the ski season. easyJet has long
given skiiers more choice on destinations and frequencies than any other
low-cost airline - and now offers 82 routes to 14 ski airports."
